Så här skriver Britten jag frågade..
we do indeed (poorly) grit the roads here using rock salt and ploughs. Though we always seem to run out of it and to be honest we get very slushy snow here so driving is not great even with a few mm of snow. People are starting to cotton on to the benefits of Winter tyres here now so more people are using them and traffic is a bit better. Realistically most main roads get gritted if ice/snow is predicted but then grind to a halt when it is actually snowing then the main roads get ploughed and minor roads are not generally touched. In London the busses will not run and the underground is limited. Outside of London it depends on the councils to maintain so it varies but the further north and more rural you get the less the roads get treated I think.
In a nutshell the country grinds to a halt at the mere threat of snow but then usually starts back up quite quickly!
